Children and Youth Programs

After-School Tutoring

After school tutoring is provided during the school year. We offer homework assistance and specialized tutoring in some situations to children at no cost to the student. We serve more than 100 children in several communities locally and typically operate at full capacity, with children often waiting in line before the sessions to ensure their seat in the Learning Center. Volunteers include high school students, active and retired teachers, local businessmen and women, and others that enjoy the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of “at-risk” children.

Bible Club

“Loving our neighbors” is a priority at NKC, so sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ is imperative as we extend love and kindness to children and families. For eight weeks in the spring, eight weeks in the fall, and in many locations four weeks in the summer hundreds of children flock to the many NKC locations to hear Bible stories, memorize verses, learn the plan of salvation, play games, and worship together. It is such a privilege to witness children making the decision to follow Jesus Christ. We see lives changed, including new purpose and direction for children, youth, and entire families.

Discipleship

Three levels of discipleship are offered at our flagship NKC – Western Pines.

  • Discipleship for Youth (6th – 9th grades)
  • Discipleship for Children (4th – 5th grades)
  • Little Disciples (1st – 3rd grades)

These programs are offered concurrently with Bible Club and Youth Leadership during the fall and spring semesters. The volunteer leaders have opportunity at each level to present deeper truths in age-appropriate, interactive ways.

Enrichment Opportunities

The children in Garden Villa and Western Pines have had the opportunity to participate in many enrichment activities. When individual Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, or local adults or high school students have the desire to share their knowledge and expertise with children in NKC communities, we are more than happy to work with them. Whether these students are working on their Silver or Gold Award for Girl Scouts, Eagle Scout Award for Boy Scouts, or just have the desire to share their skill, NKC welcomes the opportunity to provide the enrichment for our children.

  • Art Camp
  • Drama Camp
  • Horse Camp
  • Music Camp
  • Science Camp
  • Musical teaching presentation by violinist
  • Puppet Shows

Family Literacy program

This program launched in summer 2017 concurrent with the Summer Reading Club. When families sign up to be part of the literacy program, the children take home packets of bilingual books that are to be read with an adult family member. As books and completed response activity sheets are returned, the children receive prizes to encourage further reading.

Sports Camp

During the summer months, many of our students spend the majority of their time at home alone. They do not have an opportunity to participate in summer activities like camps, sports, or vacations like many other families. During this massive amount of down time, students are bored and often get into trouble. To combat this, Neighborhood KidZ Club partners with Mission Fuge Camps to offer summer Sports Camp for our middle school students. For three weeks during the summer, our students are engaged with organized sports and spiritual discipleship.

Summer Reading

How much a student spends reading independently is a decisive factor in determining how far students will pursue their education. This makes our Summer Reading Club one of the most important programs for our students. Each year, local chapters of National Charity League partner with Neighborhood KidZ Club to facilitate a Summer Reading Club. Students spend their summers reading books at or above their grade level and are given opportunities to critically reflect on what they have read. The children especially enjoy the prizes they earn as they record the books they have read. The children average reading 100 books during this special project. They do not have books at home, and typically don’t have the opportunity to go to local libraries. We typically see noticeable improvements in students’ fluency and interest in books.

Vacation Bible School

Neighborhood KidZ Club partners with local churches so that our children can benefit from the life-changing experiences that so often happen at Vacation Bible School. Thanks to vans donated to NKC, we have the capability to transport many children to VBS. One church graciously allows space so that the children can stay for extended time in order to enjoy a day-camp experience.

Youth Leadership

This program for 6th – 8th grade students meets for 8 weeks in the fall and the spring. The students experience a sense of community and belonging as they enjoy pizza and camaraderie with their peers. Each week they dive deep into a topical study or Bible passage and learn how to apply what they are learning in life.

Services Provided to Families

Angels of Light

Families are transported by chartered buses provided by Second Baptist Church (SBC) from multiple NKC communities to SBC for a special evening of food, entertainment, and a clear presentation of the Gospel. All children and youth leave with a Christmas gift and bags of groceries are presented to adults and youth.

Backpack and School Supply Distribution

Four chapters of National Charity League provide new backpacks filled with school supplies to the 1st – 5th graders who regularly participate in Neighborhood KidZ Club programs.

Christmas Gift Distribution

Children who regularly participate in Neighborhood KidZ Club programs have the opportunity to receive Christmas gifts and stockings that are provided by local organizations.

Home Repair Projects

Local churches regularly reach out to Neighborhood KidZ Club for their outreach projects. We are able to pair up families with home repair needs with the church teams. (i.e. Repairing decks and steps, painting projects)

ESL Classes

ESL classes are needed in the majority of the communities where NKC has a presence. Volunteers from the community provide the class for any family members who have the need to increase their knowledge and proficiency in using English as their second language.

Women’s Ministry

Spanish Bible studies are held periodically for women in the communities where NKC has a presence. Special events for women are also held as local churches partner with NKC.
